A farm sign at the end of a long drive, a barn nameplate, a storefront marker — each is read from a different distance. Use the calculators below to find the right letter height, then choose a DIBOND aluminum size that fits. Designed in Michigan, built to be read.

Sizing & Placement by Sign Type
Farm & Driveway Signs
Read from the road · 60–150 ft
Mount at the entrance so it's readable as visitors slow to turn in. Plan for 6"–10" letters and a wide DIBOND panel. Outdoor-rated aluminum holds up to sun, rain, and Michigan winters.
Barn & Property Signs
Read from the yard · 40–100 ft
For a name across a barn face or gable, go bold — 8"–12" letters carry well. Place at eye level or just above for foot traffic; higher for distance viewing.
Business & Storefront Signs
Read from sidewalk or street · 30–120 ft
Match letter height to where customers first see you. Mount near the entrance or above the door, keeping clear of glare and obstructions. Check local sign ordinances before finalizing dimensions.
Five Things That Make a Sign Easy to Read
- Size the letters first, then the sign. People read words, not panels — choose your letter height, then fit the dimensions around it.
- Contrast wins. A light background with dark letters (or the reverse) reads far better at a distance than two similar tones.
- Leave breathing room. Generous space around your text helps the message stand out — aim for roughly 40% text to 60% open space.
- Mind the angle and the light. A sign viewed at a sharp angle or in glare needs to be larger than the chart suggests.
- Choose a clean, readable font. Thin scripts look lovely up close but vanish from the road. Save delicate styles for door-distance signs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size letters should my sign have?
It depends on how far away you want it to be read. The reliable rule of thumb: every 1 inch of letter height gives about 10 feet of easy readability. So a sign meant to be read from 60 feet wants roughly 6-inch letters. Use the calculators above to find your number, then pick a panel size that fits the words comfortably.
Should I size the sign or the letters first?
Always the letters first. The letter height determines how far your sign can be read, so it makes sense to "reverse engineer" the design — decide on readability, then build the sign dimensions around the lettering and spacing.
Are your signs suitable for outdoors?
Our DIBOND aluminum signs are outdoor-rated and made for farm, barn, and business use — they stand up to sun, rain, and seasonal weather. Our canvas and acrylic signs are designed for indoor display only.
How long will an outdoor metal sign last?
The DIBOND aluminum substrate is built to last roughly 10–15 years outdoors, with the printed graphics typically holding their color for about 5–10 years depending on sun exposure and placement.
Where are your signs made?
Every sign is designed in Michigan, drawing on more than 35 years of graphic design experience, then produced and shipped across the US and Canada.
What are these recommendations based on?
The letter-height guidance follows the widely used legibility index from research by the United States Sign Council and the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute at Penn State — the same standard the sign industry relies on. Lighting, viewing angle, contrast, and font choice can all shift the real-world result.
Recommendations are guidelines, not guarantees. Actual readability varies with lighting, viewing angle, weather, color contrast, and font. For custom sizing help, reach out and we'll design it with you.
