Five Things That Make a Sign Easy to Read
- Size the letters first, then the sign. People read words, not panels — choose your letter height, then fit the dimensions around it.
- Contrast wins. A light background with dark letters (or the reverse) reads far better at a distance than two similar tones.
- Leave breathing room. Generous space around your text helps the message stand out — aim for roughly 40% text to 60% open space.
- Mind the angle and the light. A sign viewed at a sharp angle or in glare needs to be larger than the chart suggests.
- Choose a clean, readable font. Thin scripts look lovely up close but vanish from the road. Save delicate styles for door-distance signs.
